Dear Friends,

As we observe Memorial Day, we are summoned to give thought to those who lost and who gave their lives for the values and ideals that are this country and its promise for us and for humanity. And while the vision has yet to be realized in full, the truth is that our world very much needs America to hold fast to the ideals that are at the heart and soul of this country.

As a proud American and as a proud Jew, I believe that both heritages bring with them responsibilities and sacred hopes. And both are rooted in those words from our Torah that are inscribed on the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia:

“Proclaim liberty throughout the land unto all the inhabitant there of.”

So may this continue to be a land of opportunity and freedom, and may our message of hope, human dignity and basic human rights for all be proclaimed to people everywhere.

                 Shabbat Shalom
